Freetown
Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, lies on the country's west coast on the Atlantic Ocean. It has around 836 thousand inhabitants, though some estimates put the figure at over a million. It is the key political, economic and cultural centre, with an important seaport. Surrounded by tropical forests and sandy beaches, the city sits on the Freetown Peninsula. The climate is humid equatorial, with a rainy season from May to October. The best time to visit is the dry season, when storms are less frequent.
