    Bahrain is a monarchy in the Persian Gulf, between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. It consists of the island of Al Bahrain and several smaller islets. The country is flat, with a desert climate and sparse vegetation. It gained independence in 1971, and since 2002 it has been ruled by a king. Bahrain's history reaches back to pre-Islamic times, when it was an important trading centre. The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when temperatures are milder, avoiding the hot summer months.
